Army ROTC - Department of Military Science
Army ROTC is the most common path to becoming an Army Officer. Upon completion of Army ROTC you will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant in one of 17 career fields. As an officer you will have a demanding and challenging profession. You will lead, train, and mentor your subordinates in military actions and personal development. Army ROTC wants to give you a scholarship and a job starting at over $38,000/year. Read on and call Army ROTC with any questions.
Types of Scholarships
- 4 year Scholarship for high school seniors
- 3 year Advanced Designee Scholarship for high school seniors
- 2 &3 year Army ROTC Scholarships (on campus)
- 2, 3,& 4 year Nursing Scholarship
- Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)
- Helicopter Flight Training Program Scholarship (HFTP)
Scholarship Benefits (except #5 & 6)
- Up to $20,000 annually
- Tuition
- Education lab fees
- Does not cover room & board or flight fees
- $450 book allowance per semester
- $250-$400 tax free subsistence allowance per month during school each year for freshmen through seniors, respectively
- Opportunities to attend military schools (Airborne, Air Assault, Northern, or Mountain Warfare)
- Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD). 2 year tuition scholarship available.
Scholarship Qualifications and Requirements
- Be a U.S. Citizen
- 19 on ACT or 920 on SAT
- Have good high school grades or 2.5 GPA
- Be a high school graduate or equivalent
- Participate in leadership, extracurricular, and athletic activities (part time work earns you substituted credit)
- Meet physical fitness and weight standards
- Be under 31 by December 31 of the year you expect to graduate from college.
- Be accepted into UND ROTC Fighting Sioux Battalion
- Agree to accept a commission in the Regular Army, Army National Guard, or U.S. Army Reserves, whichever is offered
4 year and Advanced Designee Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to the most outstanding applicants. In keeping with our high standards of excellence, candidates are selected based on scholastic and extracurricular accomplishments and not on the basis of financial need. Students may be eligible for these scholarships if they will be entering college as a freshman. Applications for these scholarships can be found at www.armyrotc.com starting June 15 of the year prior to entering college. Applications must be postmarked no later than December 1 of that year.
2 & 3-Year Army ROTC Scholarships
Students who have already completed one or two years of college may be eligible for these scholarships. Applicants compete on a competitive basis with other students at UND and those who desire to transfer to UND. Students who are thinking about applying are encouraged to take Military Science 100 and 200 level classes their freshman and sophomore years. Students with no experience are still eligible for scholarship by attending ROTC Leadership Training Camp. Call the Military Science Department at 701-777 3498 for more information.
2, 3,&4 Year Nursing Scholarship
Nursing Cadets at UND compete locally and nationally for this scholarship. In addition to the financial scholarship benefits, Nursing Cadets are exposed to the professionalism of Army Nursing. Between their junior and senior year Nursing Cadets have the opportunity to attend the 3 week Nurse Summer Training Program (NSTP) at one of several Army hospitals located throughout the world. This training provides a learning experience that integrates military skills, leadership, clinical nursing, and administrative and interpersonal skills.
Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)
The SMP allows enlisted members of the Army National Guard or Reserve to train with ROTC while in college in order to receive a commission upon graduation. SMP cadets continue to train with their guard units one weekend a month and two weeks a year. During training SMP cadets shadow a junior officer for more hands on experience. Cadets also will participate in the ROTC advanced courses and attend the Leadership Development and Assessment Course between their Junior and Senior years.

Helicopter Flight Training Scholarship
This scholarship program is designed for aviation majors who have contracted with Army ROTC and want to fly helicopters. This program is unique to UND and pays approximately $93,500 in flight fees. Upon completion, cadets earn Private, Commercial, and Instrument helicopter ratings (approx. 175 hours).
Additional Qualifications and Requirements
- At least a private pilot fixed wing rating (at your own expense)
- Pass Class 1A Flight Physical
- Pass Army Aviation Flight Aptitude Skills Test (AFAST)
- 20/20 uncorrected near vision
- 20/50 distant vision corrected to 20/20
Benefits of Being an Army Officer
As an officer in the United States Army, the individual will carry on a proud tradition which has been upheld for more than two centuries of American history.
